City police have released a sketch of a male who sexually assaulted another male at a south Winnipeg park last month.
Police described it as a serious sexual assault but said the complainant was not seriously injured. It's a bit of a unique case because most sexual assault victims are female. Many sexual assaults on males go unreported.
"It took a lot of courage for him to come forward," police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput said of the 39-year-old victim.
Both male and female victims avoid reporting sexual assaults for a variety of reasons -- some may fear no one will believe them or they may feel humiliated or embarrassed, said Lorraine Parrington of Klinic Community Health Centre's sexual assault crisis program.
ISOLATED AREA
Chaput said the victim told police he was walking alone in Maple Grove Park, at St. Mary's Road and the south Perimeter Highway, when he was approached by a male who physically assaulted then sexually assaulted him in an isolated area near the park's entrance.
The incident happened Saturday, June 21, at 9:30 p.m., just before dusk. The man contacted police a day later.
Chaput said this is the first report of such an incident in the park, so police don't believe people should be too worried. Still, police urge people to avoid being alone in any park at night, to be aware of their surroundings, and not to place themselves in situations where they are vulnerable.
Yesterday, police released a composite sketch of the suspect. The man is white, in his early 40s, 6-foot-4 with an athletic build, medium-length dark hair, and a beard. He wore a dark shirt, dark shorts and white running shoes.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police at 986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
